Is Ha Long Bay the same as Lan Ha Bay?
No. They are neighbouring parts of the same limestone seascape. Ha Long Bay is in Quang Ninh province; Lan Ha Bay lies south and east of Cat Ba Island and belongs to Hai Phong city. Fees, piers and permits differ.
Can I visit Ha Long Bay as a day trip from Hanoi?
Yes. The drive is about two to two and a half hours each way, and a day route on the bay takes three to six hours, so the whole day runs to ten or twelve hours.
Does this site sell cruises or recommend boats?
No. It sells nothing, takes no bookings and does not name, rank or compare boats or boat companies. It explains criteria for choosing one yourself.
When is typhoon season in Ha Long Bay?
The UK Foreign Office says the tropical cyclone season normally runs from May to November, though storms can occur at other times. Boats are kept in port when a storm approaches.

The bays
Which bay is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site?
Ha Long Bay has been listed since 1994. In 2023 the listing was extended to the Cat Ba Archipelago, which includes Lan Ha Bay. Part of Bai Tu Long National Park also lies within the Ha Long Bay heritage area.
Can I see two bays in one trip?
Ha Long and Lan Ha combine well, either on a boat that crosses between them or with the public ferry from Tuan Chau to Gia Luan. Bai Tu Long and Lan Ha are at opposite ends of the coast and rarely combine.
Is Ha Long city worth a night?
It is a practical base rather than a destination in itself. A night there makes sense if you want an early boat, the cable car or the seafood, or if someone in your group does not want to sleep aboard.

Ha Long Bay
Which Ha Long Bay route has Sung Sot Cave and Ti Top?
Route VHL2, formerly route 2. It usually takes about five to six hours and also includes Luon Cave.
How many hours do I need on Ha Long Bay?
Three to four hours for route 1, five to six for route 2, six to eight for routes 3 to 5. One night aboard adds the quieter early morning and evening.
Is Ha Long Bay too crowded?
The main caves and Ti Top are busy in the middle of the day. Starting early, choosing a less used route or staying overnight reduces the crowding noticeably.
Are the entrance fees included in tours?
Usually, in package tours from Hanoi, but not in every case. Ask whether the bay entry fee and the port fee are included before you pay.

Lan Ha Bay
Is Lan Ha Bay part of Ha Long Bay?
It is part of the same limestone seascape and, since 2023, of the same UNESCO World Heritage site, but it is a separate bay administered by Hai Phong city rather than Quang Ninh province.
Can I kayak in Lan Ha Bay?
Kayaking was suspended in 2024 pending new rules and was reported open again in 2025. Confirm with your boat that kayaking is licensed on your date before you book for it.
How do I get from Ha Long to Cat Ba?
Take the public ferry from Tuan Chau to Gia Luan on the north of Cat Ba, about 40 to 60 minutes, then about 30 minutes by road to Cat Ba town.
Is one night enough for Lan Ha Bay?
One night is the minimum that makes the journey worthwhile. Two nights allow a full day on the water and time on Cat Ba Island.

Bai Tu Long Bay
Is Bai Tu Long Bay less crowded than Ha Long Bay?

Where do Bai Tu Long boats leave from?
Mostly from Hon Gai or the Bai Chay cruise port in Ha Long city for overnight trips, and from Ao Tien in Van Don for day boats and ferries to Quan Lan and Co To.
Can I land on the islands of Bai Tu Long National Park?

About
Is I Love Halong an official tourism site?
No. It is an independent guide. It links to official sources such as the Ha Long Bay Management Board so that you can check facts yourself.
Why do you not recommend specific boats?
Because boats change owners, names and standards, and a recommendation ages quickly. The guide gives criteria you can apply to any boat instead.
Does advertising affect what you write?
Advertising is labelled and kept separate from the text. Advertisers cannot buy a mention or a position in it.
How do I report a mistake?
Use the contact page. Say which page, what is wrong, and how you know.
