Choose a trip
Day trip or overnight, and how to judge any boat
The choice between a day trip and a night aboard is mostly about time and money. The choice of boat is about safety, route and what happens when the weather turns. This page gives criteria for both, and names no boats.
Day trip or overnight: the trade-offs
| Day trip from Hanoi | Day route from Ha Long city | One night aboard | Two nights aboard | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Time on the water | 3 to 6 hours | 3 to 8 hours | About 20 to 24 hours | About 44 to 48 hours |
| Time on the road from Hanoi | 4 to 5 hours return, same day | Split over two days | 4 to 5 hours, split | 4 to 5 hours, split |
| Areas reached | One route | One route | One or two areas | Two bays possible |
| Quiet hours on the bay | No | Early start possible | Evening and dawn | Evenings and dawns |
| Entry fee (per person) | 200,000–250,000 VND | 200,000–250,000 VND | About 500,000–550,000 VND | About 650,000–750,000 VND |
| Storm exposure | Lowest | Low | Higher: overnight permits are suspended first | Highest |
Hours are planning estimates. Entry fees are the public fees for the bay, not trip prices. Overnight fees depend on the route. Package prices vary far more than fees and are not listed here.

When a day trip is enough
- You want to see the bay and one or two of its famous sights, and Hanoi is your base.
- Your dates fall in the storm season and you would rather not risk an overnight cancellation.
- Someone in your group does not want to sleep on a boat, or is prone to seasickness.
- You are staying in Ha Long city and can take an early route before the crowds.
The compromise many people miss is a night in Ha Long city and an early day route. It gives you the quieter morning without a cabin, and it turns a twelve-hour day into two relaxed half-days.
When a night aboard is worth it
- You want the bay after the day boats have gone: late afternoon light, dinner at anchor, sunrise.
- You want kayaking and a swim as well as a cave, without rushing.
- You want to reach Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long, which are further from the piers.
- You are visiting between October and May, when the storm risk is lower.
Two nights make sense for combining bays, or for people who find the first afternoon goes mostly on boarding, safety briefings and lunch. A third night tends to repeat itself.
Shared boat or private boat
A shared boat sells seats to several groups on the same route. It is the cheapest way onto the bay, and on a day route it works well: the stops are fixed by the route anyway, and the crew handles tickets and landings. The costs are a fixed timetable, a larger group at each stop, and little say over how long you stay anywhere.
A private boat carries only your group. It lets you leave earlier or later than the crowd, linger at a kayaking spot or skip a cave, within the limits of the licensed route. For families with young children, people who need more time on steps, or groups of six or more, the difference in price per person can be smaller than expected. Either way, the route number, the pier and the weather terms are the same questions, and the checklist below applies to both.
A plain checklist for any boat
These questions apply to any boat, shared or private, day or overnight. A reputable seller can answer all of them; an evasive answer is itself information.
- 01
Which route, exactly?
Ask for the official route number, VHL1 to VHL8 on Ha Long Bay, and the pier. The route decides what you see and the fee you pay.
- 02
Is the boat registered and inspected?
The UK Foreign Office advises checking a boat's safety record and registration and the certification of its crew.
- 03
What is the hull made of?
Quang Ninh has been replacing wooden hulls with steel or equivalent since 2021 and plans to require steel by 2030 on Ha Long and Bai Tu Long.
- 04
Where are the life jackets, and is there a briefing?
Life jackets, GPS, a weather radio and fire equipment have been required on Ha Long boats since 2012.
- 05
What happens if the port closes?
Get the refund or rebooking terms in writing for the case when the authorities stop departures.
- 06
What is included?
Bay entry fee, port fee, kayaks, meals, drinks and transfers: ask about each one.

Signs that should make you walk away
- No route number, or a vague answer about where the boat goes.
- No life jackets visible, or jackets stored locked away.
- A boat that looks overloaded at the pier. Overcrowding has caused accidents, according to the UK Foreign Office.
- Pressure to pay in full in cash, with no written terms for weather cancellations.
- An offer of a seaplane or helicopter add-on: the seaplane sightseeing service stopped in April 2026 and helicopter flights were halted in 2023, so check that it exists.

Overnight boats: extra questions
In 2026 there were 97 accommodation boats on Ha Long Bay, with 1,815 rooms between them. More than 110 boats have been newly built or replaced with steel hulls since 2021, so the fleet ranges widely in age and design. The UK Foreign Office specifically advises considering safety standards carefully before an overnight trip on Halong Bay.
- How many cabins and passengers does the boat carry, and how many crew?
- Is there a ladder or tender for getting ashore, and how are passengers transferred at the caves?
- What happens if overnight permits are suspended while you are aboard? In June 2025 boats were ordered to bring passengers ashore before 6 pm.
- Which areas does it visit, and does it cross into Lan Ha (Hai Phong) or stay in Ha Long Bay (Quang Ninh)?

Common questions
Questions readers ask
Is a day trip to Ha Long Bay worth it?
Yes, if you choose the route for what you want to see and accept a long day. A night in Ha Long city and an early route is a gentler alternative.
Which boat should I choose?
This guide does not recommend boats. Use the checklist: route number, registration, hull, life jackets and briefing, weather terms, and what is included.
Are overnight boats safe?
Standards vary. The UK Foreign Office advises considering safety standards carefully, checking registration and crew certification, and insisting on a briefing and a life jacket.
What if my overnight trip is cancelled for weather?
The authorities stop departures when storms approach. What happens to your money depends on the seller's terms, so get them in writing before you pay.
